This is one of my assignment...comment on current issue...any grammar error, spelling error, not understand the meaning...feel free to write to me... ;p

“The secondary school students were having a tougher time coping with the learning of Mathematics and Science in English than the primary school pupils.” ~ The Star

Surprisingly that nowadays, the secondary school students were having problem in learning Mathematics and Sciences in English. All the secondary schools students and primary schools pupils are advice to watch more TV programmes such as educational programmes or cartoons to understand and speak better English.

Is it works and is it applicable? While they are watching those English programmes, it might not really learn to understand and speak better English, because it had actually provided the Malay subtitle. The students may catch the meaning through reading the subtitles but not listening to the conversation. Thus, this will only improve their Bahasa Melayu, not English.

Besides that, it is the same happen in cinema. Frankly, most of the students prefer to watch western movie than Cantonese movie. Especially to the Chinese educated students. However, they are too rely more on the Chinese subtitles which had been provided. They are just “reading” the movie, not “watching”. What a waste to “watch” movie in cinema.

Thus, I would like to stress on some useful suggestion that can improve students’ English Language. First of all, students should read more English book such as science fictions, love stories, detectives, or even comics will do. It is very sure that the library must have tons of English books in it. You could just spend some time on reading these books to improve their vocabulary and learning on the style of the writing from author.

Secondly, you must be trained to write English journal once a week. You might found that writing is the worst thing to do. Yet, you shouldn’t afraid of it because that is the only chance for you to write freely, without worry the grammatical error or spelling error and even the sentence structure. This is a method of improving your skill on express yourselves in English. At least, you must start first step, to have free writing at first. After a few times, then only write the journal in a proper way which has a thesis statement and supporting point in each paragraph.

Furthermore, listen to radio is a best way to understand and speak better English. I would like to recommend Light & Easy (FM 105.7) to everyone because it is the only station which broadcast a lot of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s song. These are the song which you can hear clearly the lyrics and able to understand the meaning of the song. Moreover, the deejay speak very clear English that you can get the meaning with no confuse. For the first time to listen English radio station, you might not get use to it, even can’t understand what the deejay is talking about. Even the advertisement on the radio is too fast that you might not get the meaning. However, once the ads and songs keep repeating to you, slowly you will get it.

Finally, there is another way to learn English, which you can do newspaper cutting. Every day in the Sin Chew Daily, there is a section which teaches us English sentence or phrase. It provides very detail information that after you read it, you will understand how to use the phrase and create a sentence. Besides that, The Star also has a section in teaching English at Star Two. Some times the readers will write to the editor, point out that they found out some English grammar or spelling error in the public or in the newspaper itself. They point out the error and provide the correct information to readers. You can cut out all these English teaching material, stick it on a blank book, and have revision everyday. This may help you improve your English too.

Last but not least, you should try your best to speak English in class with your teachers or your friends. The more you speak, the more error you will find out, the more you will learn from it. We are not born talent, thus we have to work out for it.

English as a universal language in the world, it is advisable to master this foreign language, or I should say, it is a must, to master this language. It is widely use in every firm and it is one of the powerful languages all over the world.
